Staghorn Corals fringing reef

Staghorn coral is a hard coral that grows fairly fast (for coral). It is found throughout all tropical regions, though different oceans have slightly different colors. Staghorn normally serves to colonize an area, creating the initial fringe reef that then allows the growth of other corals. Like soft coral, staghorn likes current. Often only the top meter is thriving while underneath the staghorn dies down. An excellent place for small to medium fish to hide, it also serves as "high school" for a number of fish.
