Elephant Ride, Phuket 2004

Elephant ride (and dousing). The native elephants where once used extensively for transportation and construction. They were always revered and respected. The relationship is more of cooperation than of exploitation. However, with cars, trucks, and heavy construction equiptment, the financial value of an elephant has dropped. Their appetites of 800 kg of food per day has not. Now they give tourists rides to earn their keep.
